Capitals Re-Sign Tomas Kundratek To Two-Year Extension

The Capitals re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Tomas Kundratek to a two-year contract extension Tuesday.

The first year of his new contract is a one-way deal worth $550,000, while the second is a two-way deal worth $550,000 at the NHL level and $150,000 at the AHL level.

Kundratek established himself as one of Washington's top defensive prospects last season, appearing in 25 games while scoring one goal and assisting on six others. The 23-year-old was a regular in the lineup until March 14 when he suffered a right leg injury against the Hurricanes. Kundratek was later sent to the Capitals' minor-league affiliate in Hershey.

Kundratek will likely challenge Steven Oleksy for a spot on the Capitals' third defensive pairing when the team reconvenes for training camp in September.
