Capitals Promote Ross Mahoney to Assistant General Manager

The Washington Capitals have promoted Ross Mahoney to assistant general manager, the team announced Monday morning.

Mahoney has spent the past 16 seasons as the director of amateur scouting, overeeing the Capitals' amateur scouting staff and playing an integral role in the organization's drafting process.

Under Mahoney, the Capitals have found success drafting in the middle to late first round. In recent seasons, Tom Wilson (16th overall in 2012), Evgeny Kuznetsov (26th in 2010), Marcus Johansson (24th in 2009) and John Carlson (27th in 2008) have all found roles on the Capitals' roster. The Capitals hold the 13th overall pick in next week's NHL draft.

He will continue to do so in his new position, assisting and advising general manager Brian MacLellan (whom he succeeded as assistant general manager) in all player-related matters.

“Ross is an excellent judge of talent and the success he has enjoyed on the amateur scouting level speaks volumes of his expertise,” MacLellan said in a statement. “He is a great asset for our hockey operations staff and someone I greatly respect.”

MacLellan and Mahoney will each address the media in separate conference calls Monday afternoon.
