Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin left Russia's game against Germany on Sunday at the IIHF World Championship in Minsk with an apparent right leg injury.
During a rush up ice, Ovechkin was upended by German forward Marcus Kink with his right knee bearing the brunt of the impact. After writhing on the ice for a few minutes, he had to be helped off by two people. (Russian Machine Never Breaks has footage of the collision in question.)
Russian coach Oleg Znarok confirmed to reporters that Ovechkin was taken to a hospital for further evaluation.
"We are aware that Alex Ovechkin sustained an injury during today's game versus Germany," the Capitals said in a statement. "Our medical staff is working with Ovechkin and Team Russia to gather additional information at this time."
The extent of the injury is unknown. Initial reports indicated that Ovechkin's injury was "pretty bad," though it seems that it may not be as serious are originally feared. The 28-year-old returned to the team hotel without crutches, but was noticeably limping.
