Virginia Tech Back in Black

Hokies get stylish for FedEx Game

Black is apparently the new maroon. Or is it the new orange?

We'll leave that up to the fashion experts. But sports fans should know that the Virginia Tech football team will wear some stylish black duds when it takes on Boise State Monday at FedEx Field.

It marks the first time in more than 100 years that the Hokies will wear black on the football field. Why black? Besides making them look mean, it pays homage to the original VT football team, which wore gray-and-black uniforms -- quite a style statement at the time, we're sure.

The new Nike unis will include black jerseys, pants and socks to go along with bright orange shoes.

The uniform will also have some other unique characteristics:

“Ut Prosim” (That I May Serve), the motto of the school and of the cadets, appears inside the back yoke of the jersey, on the back of the helmet and on the inside cuff of the gloves. The school’s trademark VT logo forms when the palms of the gloves face outward."

The black helmet will include the traditional VT on the sides and maroon striping down the middle.

Not to be outdone, Nike is also outfitting Boise State with new uniforms. The jersey will be gray with blue pants and shoes.

By the way, if you didn't know, the official Virginia Tech colors are PMS 208 (Chicago maroon) and PMS 158 (burnt orange), according to the school. For all you coding geeks out there, that's hex code 660000 and FF6600.
