United Stays in Fourth Place as D.C. Draws 0-0 With Galaxy

D.C. holds its own against rain, Beckham

The heavy rain didn't make a difference.  Neither did David Beckham's return in Saturday night's game between D.C. United and the Los Angeles Galaxy

The game still ended in a 0-0 draw, keeping United (6-5-11) in fourth place in the Eastern Conference.  But D.C. (5-0-5 at RFK Stadium) also remains one of two teams without a home loss, along with Columbus -- even it's been without a win since July 18.

Beckham was back on the field after serving a one-game suspension for a red card given Aug. 15 against Seattle. The Galaxy beat Chicago 2-0 Wednesday without their English star but couldn't find the net in soggy conditions on the same field where Beckham made his MLS debut Aug. 9, 2007.

Beckham made his presence felt nearly immediately. A long curling pass from the right side into the center of the penalty box had to be punched away in traffic by United goalkeeper Josh Wicks in the fourth minute.

United captain Ben Olsen was given a yellow card in the 10th minute for a collision with Beckham near midfield.

Both teams had scoring chances. Eddie Lewis' shot from the top of the penalty area was knocked away by United defender Bryan Namoff in the 41st minute.

United briefly thought they had taken a lead in the eighth minute, but Luciano Emilio's goal was waved off as he was called offside.
Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts leaped and pushed Santino Quaranta's shot over the bar in the 37th minute, and made a save on Namoff's header one minute later on the corner kick.

D.C. United coach Tom Soehn missed the game with flu-like symptoms. Assistant Chad Ashton took over the coaching duties.
