Sherwood Downs Linganore for 4A Title

Thomas 1st coach to win titles at 3 schools

Zach Splain threw his 35th touchdown pass of the season and Dominique Davis and Hasani Samms each rushed for touchdowns as Sherwood of Montgomery County beat Linganore of Frederick County, 21-3, in the Maryland 4A high school football championship on Friday night at M&T Bank Stadium.

Both teams entered unbeaten, but Sherwood (14-0) shut down Linganore's high-powered offense to win its third state title and make Al Thomas the first coach in Maryland history to win state titles at three different schools.

Thomas previously won five titles at Seneca Valley and two at Damascus. His eight championships tie Bob Milloy for the most in state history.

Sherwood took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Splain to wide receiver James Oboh. After Linganore pulled within 7-3 on Andy Eckards 31-yard field goal, Davis scored on a one-yard touchdown run to put Sherwood ahead 14-3 with 4 minutes left before halftime.

In the third quarter, after the teams traded turnovers, Samms scored on a 23-yard touchdown run to the right for a 21-3 lead. Meantime, Sherwood's defense shut down Linganore's high-powered offense.

The Lancers (13-1) had been averaging 43 points per game and 53 points in their three previous playoff games.
