Skins Latest Signing Offers Little Promise of a Punting Upgrade

Team signs veteran Dirk Johnson

ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins, who ranked last in the NFL in net punting yardage average last season, have signed veteran Dirk Johnson, who ranked near the bottom of the league with the NFC champion Arizona Cardinals last season, the Associated Press reported.

Johnson has played seven seasons with New Orleans; Philadelphia, with whom he punted in a Super Bowl loss to the New England Patriots following the 2004 season; Chicago; and Arizona, with whom he might have punted in another Super Bowl loss last month had he not been cut with four games left in the regular season. He struggled with the Cardinals, punting for averages of 41.8 yards per and 35.2 yards net.

Quite an upgrade.

Johnson has a 41.7-yard career average and a career net average of 35.9.
