Olympian Oscar Pistorius Released Early From Prison to House Arrest

Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius was freed from a South African prison Monday after serving less than a year behind bars for the 2013 shooting death of his girlfriend.

The athlete's lawyer, Brian Webber, confirmed the release to NBC News, adding that Pistorious was now staying at an uncle's house under correctional supervision.

Pistorius, 28, is serving a five-year term for the killing of Reeva Steenkamp, a law graduate and model. His release into house arrest was announced last week by a prison parole board.

A representative of Steenkamp's family said Pistorius' fate mattered little to them, because she was never coming back.
