Rio by the Numbers Day 5: Oldest Swimmer to Win Gold, Most Points for USA Basketball and More

Michael Phelps, the most decorated modern Olympian ever, just tied a record that's stood since ancient Greece, according to an Olympic historian

Michael Phelps makes more history as he adds to his gold medal stash, refugee athlete Popole Misenga scores first-round victory in judo, and soldiers are out in force amid growing security concerns as the 2016 Rio Olympic Games continue into the fifth day.

Here are some notable figures from Day 5:

2.73: Katie Ledecky entered the final leg of the women's 4x200-meter freestyle relay behind by 0.89 seconds and ended it 1.84 seconds ahead, a swing of 2.73 seconds. The dominating performance earned the U.S. another swimming gold, Ledecky's third in Rio with one more event to go.

293: The number of points that U.S. basketball forward Carmelo Anthony has scored in Olympic competition. He overtook the previous leader, LeBron James, in Wednesday's victory over Australia.

11: Eleven sports awarded 20 gold medals at the Rio Olympics on Wednesday, with four of them coming at the Olympic Aquatics Center, including the U.S. women's swimming team.

15: The number of years since refugee athlete Popole Misenga has seen his family in the Congo. On Wednesday Misenga won his first-round match in the men's division of judo's 90-kilogram division. In a crowd dotted with Brazilian flags, the cheers for Misenga's victory were deafening.

31: At 31 years, 41 days, Michael Phelps became the oldest swimmer to win an individual gold when he narrowly edged out Japan's Masato Sakai in Tuesday's 200m butterfly. Phelps will have an opportunity to add to his legend when he competes Thursday in the 200m individual medley.

2,168: The last time an athlete won 12 individual Olympics titles, as Phelps did Tuesday, was over two millenia ago in ancient Greece, according to an Olympic historian. Leonidas won three races at four consecutive ancient Olympic games 2,168 years ago, Bill Ballon tweeted.

3: Kristin Armstrong of the United States won her third consecutive Olympic time trial Wednesday, covering the course through driving wind and rain in 44 minutes, 26.42 seconds, beating reigning bronze medalist Olga Zabelinskaya of Russia by just 5.55 seconds.

Armstrong, who turns 43 on Thursday, joined speed skater Bonnie Blair as the only American women to win three gold medals in the same event at any Olympics. She also won in Beijing and London.

6: The number of three-pointers Diana Taurasi scored in the U.S. women's basketball game against Serbia, breaking a U.S. Olympic record.

85,000: The number of soldiers that have been deployed in Rio to protect both participants and attendees of the 2016 Olympic Games — twice that of the 2012 London Olympics.

Rio Olympic officials say military police are stepping up security after a bus carrying journalists had two windows broken after being struck by what it calls "unknown projectiles."

Britain's Press Association, however, is quoting Lee Michaelson, a retired U.S. Air Force captain who covers women's basketball, as saying she instinctively hit the floor when she heard the gunfire.

The Rio organizing committee says patrols have been stepped up after the incident Tuesday involving a bus traveling toward the Olympic Park. The committee says the driver heard a noise from inside the bus, which he thought was photography equipment falling down.

The International Olympic Committee says the matter is under investigation.
