Michael Phelps

Country: USA
Sport: Swimming
Date of Birth: 06/30/1985
First Olympics: 2000, Sydney

Winning 22 medals in his Olympic career, Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian in history. 18 of the medals he won were gold.

Phelps, who is from Towson, Maryland, and graduated from Towson High School in 2003, lives in Baltimore with his fiancee and his son, Boomer, who was born May 5.

In his fifth Olympics, Phelps will compete in the 4x100-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, 200-meter butterfly, 200-meter IM, 400-meter IM and the 4x100-meter medley.

Phelps won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 -- more than any other athlete at an Olympics. He became the youngest man to break a world record when he broke the 200-meter butterfly record at 2001 Spring Nationals when he was 15 years old.

After winning four gold and two silver medals at the London Olympics in 2012, Phelps claimed he was permanently retiring. He returned to the pool in April 2014 without committing to an Olympic run.

That fall, Phelps was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and was suspended by USA Swimming for six months. He returned in 2015 sober and dedicated to getting back in top form for Rio — and in August he clocked three of that year’s fastest times in the world. Phelps has committed to coaching alongside longtime coach Bob Bowman at Arizona State University following the 2016 Rio Olympics.
