Maryland women advance to second round of Terrapin Classic

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Marah Strickland had a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds, Lynetta Kizer added 18 points and No. 14 Maryland defeated UNC Asheville 90-57 Monday in the first round of the Terrapin Classic.

Sa'de Wiley Gatewood added 12 points for Maryland (10-2), which has won three straight and 10 of 11. The Terrapins played their first home game since Nov. 23.

Kendall Shepard and Lindsey Thompson each scored 12 points for the Bulldogs (3-8), now 1-23 all-time against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents.

Kristi Toliver, the Terrapins' starting point guard, served a one-game suspension for violating a team rule. She will return Tuesday for the tournament final against Mississippi State, which beat Marshall 73-65.

Consecutive 3-pointers by Thompson gave Asheville a 21-20 lead with 6:33 remaining in the first half. But the Terrapins, who started 6-for-28 from the floor, scored the next 13 points.
