GW Fires Coach Hobbs

Three days after Jim Larranaga left George Mason University to take the head coaching job at the University of Miami, George Washington University has fired men’s basketball coach Karl Hobbs.

Hobbs was head coach for 10 seasons, but George Washington has only posted winning seasons twice in the past four years.

Hobbs led the Colonials to the NCAA Tournament in three consecutive seasons, including 2006 when the Colonials went 16-0 in the Atlantic 10 and defeated UNC-Wilmington in the first round of the tourney before falling to Duke in the second.

The program has fallen on hard times since then, including back-to-back losing seasons in 2008 and 2009.

Last week, the school hired a new athletic director, Patrick Nero.

Hobbs was told Monday afternoon he was being let go.
