Two prominent former college basketball standouts in the D.C. area were recently cut as NBA teams trimmed their rosters before the start of the season. Another Washington-area product is making a name for himself in the community.
The New York Knicks cut fan favorite Patrick Ewing Jr., son of the team's former franchise player, on Monday.
The former Georgetown Hoya was let go so the team could keep guard Anthony Roberson. But Ewing Jr. didn't make it an easy decision. On Friday, he energized the crowd by throwing down two big dunks and drained a 3-pointer in a nine-minute span of the fourth quarter against the New Jersey Nets.
According to the New York Post, the Knicks said Ewing Jr. has to work on his defense if he's to stick in the NBA. He could catch on with the NBA's D-League or he could go to Europe.

In other Georgetown news, Jeff Green recently had his option for the 2009-10 season picked up by the Oklahoma City Thunder, so he'll have at least two more seasons of playing with Kevin Durant.

Meanwhile, the Houston Rockets placed former Maryland Terrapin guard D.J. Strawberry on waivers Friday and instead kept guard Von Wafer, who got hot at the right time from the outside as camp closed.
Strawberry is the son of former baseball outfielder Darryl Strawberry.
