DC United to Host Real Madrid in August Friendly

Game to be played at FedEx Field

D.C. United will play Spanish power Real Madrid in an exhibition match this summer.

The MLS club announced Thursday that it will host the Spanish League runner-up on Aug. 9 at FedEx Field in suburban Maryland.

The teams met in Seattle two years ago, playing to a 1-1 draw. United is second in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference with three wins and seven ties in 11 games. In La Liga, Madrid will finish in second place behind rival Barcelona, which also won the Spanish cup and the European Champions League this season.

Madrid lacks the star-studded roster of previous teams, but still has several world-class players, including Raul Gonzalez, Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas. Any new summer signings would also be scheduled to play.

The game will be played at the Washington Redskins' stadium, FedEx Field, rather than United's usual home at RFK Stadium. To make room for the match, United is moving their previously scheduled MLS game against the Kansas City Wizards to Sept. 9.
