D.C. United Headed to Prince George's County?

The District's pro soccer team could be on the move after word that Prince George's County delegates will introduce legislation that would allow the D.C. United to move to Maryland and to build a soccer stadium.

Sen. Anthony Muse and Delegate Melony Griffith will announce the legislation at a news conference on Monday in Largo. Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson and D.C. United co-owner Victor MacFarlane and team president Kevin Payne will also attend.

United reportedly wants to build a 24,000-seat stadium on three possible Prince George's sites -- two at the Morgan Blvd. Metro Station and one at the Largo Town Center Metro Station.


United has played at 48-year-old RFK Stadium in D.C. since the franchise was founded in the mid-1990s and has committed to play there at least two more years. District Mayor Adrian Fenty had hoped to strike a deal to help build a new stadium for United at Poplar Point, but no agreement has been reached as many shy away from new stadium construction after the Washington Nationals' stadium was built.

According to a news release, a soccer stadium would costs up to $195 million, but would generate $65 million to $80 million a year in economic impact.
