D.C. United Dumps Gallardo

Rumors abound on replacement

D.C. United is getting ready to start another campaign, full of optimism that it can bring home a Major League Soccer Cup for the first time since 2004, reports DCist bogger Aaron Morrissey.

But at least one teammate has received the boot.

Soccer Insider reported on Friday that the team has come to an agreement with oft-injured midfielder Marcelo Gallardo, releasing him from his contractual obligations. Gallardo, who was the highest-paid player in D.C. United history, will return to his homeland of Argentina to finish his career.

Morrissey claims it's a shame, as D.C. fans never really got to see the best of Gallardo.

As for a replacement, rumors abound to former United star Christian Gomez and other midfielders like Santino Quaranta, Clyde Simms and Joe Vide

MLS allows transfers well into April, so the team has some time to make a choice -- they may be best served by waiting until the summer transfer window, when other international players will be available to make a move, according to Morrissey.

D.C. United's first game is scheduled on Sunday, March 22 at Los Angeles Galaxy.  The game starts at 3:00 p.m.
