DC Native Skates for US Women's Hockey Team at Olympics

Haley Skarupa, a 24-year-old DC native and forward for the US women's ice hockey team, will compete at PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

She left the Boston Pride National Women’s Hockey League in November 2017 to train with the U.S. Women’s National Team.

Before she was named Hockey East Rookie of the Year in 2013 when she was a sophomore at Boston College, Skarupa grew up in Rockville, Maryland, according to usahockey.com.

She earned gold in all three IIHF Women’s World Championships she played in with Team USA, according to usahockey.com. She was also twice a top 10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, which is given to the top female college ice hockey player in the U.S.

Skarupa told North Potomac Patch the Disney movie "The Mighty Ducks" sparked her interest in hockey. She and her older brother Dylan watched it together for the first time when they were growing up.

"We were just watching it one day and he said to me, 'Let's start playing hockey,'" Skarupa said in a phone interview with Patch. "I said, 'OK. Let's do it!' Then we started playing roller hockey together and eventually he started playing ice hockey. I remember I went to all his games and I loved it and I begged my parents to let me play. And eventually for Christmas, they got me skating lessons at an instructional clinic."
