Summer Britcher, a Baltimore native whose dad works as a captain for the city’s fire department, will again represent the U.S. on the luge team during the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.

Britcher finished 15th in the women’s singles race during her previous Olympics, when she was the youngest woman on the U.S. luge team in 2014. She has won five World Cups, the most all-time singles wins in U.S. luge history.

Britcher also secured a gold medal in the team relay at the 2012 Youth Olympic Games and was recognized as a 2017 U23 World Champion. In January, she defeated Germany’s last two Olympic champions in what NBC Sports considered “the most impressive victory for a U.S. luger since Erin Hamlin’s world title in 2009.”

The 23-year-old suffered a shoulder injury in November 2016 but still won fourth place in the Lake Placid World Cup singles race and was recognized as the 2016 Norton National Champion during the 2016-2017 season.

U.S. National Luge Team coaches first identified Britcher at the 2007 U.S. Luge Challenge, according to a Team USA profile.

Britcher will join Hamlin, Raychel Germaine and Emily Sweeney on the U.S. Olympic Luge team.

Britcher grew up in Glen Rock, Pennsylvania and currently resides in Lake Placid, New York.
