The replacement players who went 3-0 playing for the Washington Redskins during the 1987 player strike will finally get Super Bowl rings, the team announced Wednesday.
Last year, ESPN Films’ 30 for 30 series documentary “Year of the Scab” told the story of the replacements, whose undefeated record during the 24-day strike helped the Redskins make the playoffs with an 11-4 record. They went on to win Super Bowl XXII with a 42-10 rout of the Denver Broncos.
While some stars from other teams crossed the picket line to play, no one on the Redskins’ roster played in those three games. The replacements' wins included a 38-12 defeat of the defending champion New York Giants and a 13-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys, who featured several of their starters who did cross the picket line.
“Their contributions are part of Redskins history and represent an integral reason why a Lombardi Trophy from the 1987 campaign resides in our facility today," owner Dan Snyder said.
No date has been set for the celebration of those players.
The Virginia General Assembly commended the replacement players Tuesday with a resolution expressing "admiration for their determination, hard work, and incredible achievements."
The team in the movie "The Replacements" starring Gene Hackman and Keanu Reeves is inspired by that 1987 team.
