Redskins Endorse Expansion of Maryland Gambling

The Washington Redskins released a statement Tuesday endorsing Maryland's Question 7, a ballot initiative that would allow a casino to be built in Prince George's County.

"As members of the Prince George’s County business community, we see it as our obligation to speak out in support of major economic development initiatives," said Dennis Greene, president of Business Operations, in the statement.

"We believe Question 7 represents a tremendous opportunity for Prince George’s County and all of Maryland to create thousands of good-paying jobs, increase funding for public schools, and help provide dollars for other critical state and local government services," Greene said.

The Redskins' release also refers to statistics on VoteforSeven.com, which say that Question 7, if passed, would create 12,000 jobs in Maryland and would yield $199 million for Maryland schools annually.

The new casino, which would be the state's sixth, would be constructed at National Harbor.

Question 7 will appear on the ballot as such:

Do you favor the expansion of commercial gaming in the State of Maryland for the primary purpose of raising revenue for education to authorize video lottery operation licensees to operate "table games" as defined by law; to increase from 15,000 to 16,500 the maximum number of video lottery terminals that may be operated in the State; and to increase from 5 to 6 the maximum number of video lottery operational licenses that may be awarded in the State and allow a video lottery facility to operate in Prince George's County.

If the ballot question passes across the state, but not in Prince George's County, table games would be allowed, but not a new casino.
