A new NBC/WSJ/Marist poll shows that Mitt Romney made significant gains in Virginia, leading Obama 48-47 percent, a 3-point increase from last week’s polls. The lead falls within the polls 3 point margin of error.
Although not transformative, it seems that Romney’s post-debate bounce has held so far -- at least in Old Dominion.
According to the poll, seven percent of Virginia voters said they decided who they would vote for after the first debate. Romney won these voters. Romney also gained among independent voters in the state, leading 50 percent to 42 percent among them.
But it’s not all good news for Romney in Virginia. While his favorable score in the swing state jumped from 45 percent to 49 percent, Obama continues to enjoy favorable ratings above 50 percent.
Obama also has a 12 point lead among women in the state.
In the Virignia Senate race, the poll found Tim Kaine leading George Allen 47 to 46 percent.
The polls coming out of Virginia have varied. A new Quinnipiac University/New York Times/CBS News poll found that Obama leads Romney in Virignia 51 to 46—the same lead the poll showed Kaine having over Allen.
An average of all the polls in Virginia by Real Clear Politics shows Obama leading Romney in the state 48.2 percent to 47.6 percent, results more consistent with the NBC findings.
The NBC/WSJ also found Obama leading in Florida 48 to 47 percent and in Ohio 51 to 45 percent (still a two-point uptick for Romney)
