D.C. Councilmember Marion Barry was hospitalized overnight Wednesday due to a drop in his blood sugar, according to his Twitter account.
His chief of staff, Joyce Clements Smith, says Barry went to the hospital after he started feeling weak. Doctors kept him overnight for observation.
Barry, 77, tweeted he was taken to a hospital by D.C. Fire and EMS when his blood sugar dropped below normal. He has had diabetes for 20 years.
Barry also added his appreciation for embattled D.C. Fire Chief Chief Kenneth Ellerbe: "A big thank you to Chief Ellerby [sic] and DC Fire and EMS. I appreciate all that you and your team do. Thank you. Good night DC. Much love, MB"
The longtime councilmember was hospitalized at least twice last year.
In May 2012, he was taken to the hospital in Las Vegas. He said he had developed a blood clot while waiting on a plane heading to a retail convention. He was also hospitalized in January 2012 for a minor operation following a urinary tract infection.
