6-Month Sentence Proposed for Ex-D.C. Campaign Aide

Federal prosecutors recommend a six-month prison sentence for a former campaign aide to District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray.

Thomas W. Gore pleaded guilty last year to illegally funneling money to a minor candidate in the 2010 mayoral election and then destroying evidence of those payments.

The money was intended to keep Sulaimon Brown in the race so that he could disparage then-incumbent Adrian Fenty. Gray has denied knowing about the payments to Brown and has not been charged.

Prosecutors said in a sentencing memorandum Friday that Gore “deliberately and repeatedly” lied to the FBI and should be punished with incarceration. But they also say he deserves credit for pleading guilty and avoiding a trial.

Gore's sentencing is scheduled for July 26.
