Ward 6 Council member Tommy Wells is upset that a redistricting plan would disrupt his ward -- which includes Capitol Hill -- more than any other area.
Part of Ward 6 east of Capitol Hill would be shifted into Ward 7, most of which lies east of the Anacostia River. Some citizens say the proposed changes disrupt established neighborhoods and should be redrawn.
By federal law, the wards have to roughly have the same population, at least within 5 percent difference.
Council members Michael A. Brown (At-Large), Jack Evans (Ward 2) and Phil Mendelson (At-Large) drew the initial map. Most of the city's eight wards saw little or no change.
After a contentious hearing on Thursday, the subcommittee voted 3-0 to move the plan forward and hold a public hearing next week. The public roundtable will be held at 6 p.m. June 1 at the Wilson Building.
