Vandals Tag Property with Anti-McCain Graffiti

Obama signs altered in Bethesda

As many as 20 homes, businesses and vehicles were vandalized late Friday night or early Saturday morning in Prince William County, Va., and some of the vandalism included statements against presidential candidate John McCain.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama campaign signs were altered in Bethesda, Md.

Property that was tagged with spray paint in Gainesville, Va., referenced swear words with McCain's name and satanic messages.

Police received a call at about 4 a.m. Saturday, and after canvassing the neighborhood found that about 13 or 14 houses were damaged.  Five businesses, including a church, and a van also were damaged.

Corey A. Stewart, at-large chairman of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, said all of the homes that were damaged had McCain signs in their yards.

"Having your home defaced with obscenity because of political beliefs is a hate crime," Stewart said.  "This is terrorizing the community."

Stewart said he will ask the Commonwealth's attorney to investigate. He said he would seek state and federal investigations, as well.

The vandalism occurred in the following areas:

  • Glenkirk Road
  • Clubhouse Road
  • Sterling Pointe Drive
  • Narrow Branch Court
  • Tembrook Drive
  • Royal Sidney Drive

Police have no suspects.  Anyone with information should contact Prince William County Crimesolvers at 703-670-3700.

The Obama/Biden signs in Bethesda were altered by placing an "s" over the "b" in the presidential candidate's name.
