Poll: McDonnell Crushing Deeds

Virginia loves its GOP again

Maybe those who thought that the Demcratic party's rare electoral sweep in Virginia last November marked some fundamental shift in the state demographics, towards liberalism, were wrong after all, because one new poll released today indicates that it's not true! Virginia shall always be red, red, red as the dickens.

Very delightful news for Bob McDonnell and his down-ticket today:

RICHMOND - Fourteen weeks away from election day, the statewide Republican campaigns have to have a spring in their steps today.

A new poll from Survey USA has the three statewide candidates with double-digit leads.

In the Governor's race, Republican Bob McDonnell is leading Democrat Creigh Deeds 55% to 40%/ Just 5% of respondents are undecided. This is well outside of the 4.3% margin of error.

Yeesh! And yes, it's still early, and who knows how locked-in voters are with their current preferences. But -- 15 percentage points! That's a considerable number of percentage points! And with a only five percent of voters undecided well before Labor Day, you've got to consider how malleable this electorate will be in the fall.

The only curiosity in this poll is that in its sampling of likely voters, 52 percent of respondents had voted for John McCain last year, while 43 percent went to Obama. The result of that actual election, however, was Obama over McCain, 53 to 46.

In other words, either this was a poor sampling job on behalf of the pollster or -- much more ominously for Democrats everywhere -- the expansive voting blocs that the Obama candidacy inspired to vote last fall might not be sticking around for the endgame.
