Obama to Address “Schoochildren”

Feds' press release on controversial speech to kids has glaring typo

When President Obama delivers his controversial speech to the nation's school kids on Tuesday, he might tell them to always double check their spelling.

That would be good advice for the U.S. Department of Education, which put out a press release hailing the event, at an Arlington, Va., high school, containing the headline, "President Obama Delivers National Address to America's Schoochildren." That's right, "schoo-children."

The speech to a captive audience of kids has drawn fire from conservatives, who say the president is trying to indoctrinate young students. In the Sept. 8 speech, Obama will challenge kids to work hard and set goals , Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a letter to principals.

But materials sent out to schools to help teachers prepare students for the speech include questions such as "How will the President inspire us?" and "How will he challenge us?" That prompted conservative author Michelle Malkin to complain that the event has a "heavy activist bent." An initial draft that included asking teachers to assign students a paper on how they could "help the President" was rewritten, with the new version dropping the request.
