Md. Gov. Candidate Mizeur Proposes Legalizing Marijuana

A Maryland lawmaker who is running for governor is proposing to legalize marijuana in the state.

Delegate Heather Mizeur announced the plan on Tuesday.

She said legalizing, regulating and taxing marijuana in a way similar to how the state regulates alcohol would provide the state with increased revenue and enhance public safety.

Mizeur said taxing marijuana sales would generate $157.5 million annually to be spent on early childhood education. The lawmaker said her plan would help ensure that prekindergarten is available to all children in Maryland.

Mizeur is seeking the Democratic nomination for the governorship.
