McCain Says He Has Always Had Faith in His Country

Republican attends two events in Virginia

SPRINGFIELD, Va. -- Republican John McCain is seizing on Democratic rival Barack Obama's comment that his victory in Iowa's caucuses last winter had "vindicated" his faith in the American people.

Campaigning in Virginia, McCain told supporters that he has always had faith in his country and that the United States, in his words, "has never had to prove anything to me."

The Arizona senator was referring to a remark Obama made Friday at a campaign stop in Des Moines. Obama's win over Hillary Rodham Clinton in Iowa put Obama on the path to being the first black man to be nominated for president by a major political party.

McCain had two events in Virginia before heading to Pennsylvania and then New York, where he was to appear on "Saturday Night Live."
