Mayor Answers Questions About Hiring of Former “Opponent”

The unusual hiring of one of Mayor Vincent Gray's opponents in the last election was questioned at the mayor's news conference Wednesday.

Sulaimon Brown is making $110,000 a year as a staff auditor.

During the mayoral race, he mainly got attention for lashing out at then Mayor Adrian Fenty and saying residents should vote for Gray if not brown himself -- just not Fenty.

"He was interviewed by the director of the agency," Gray said. "We believe he has the requisite skills to be able to do the job."

Gray seemed to recognize the change he was taking with the hire.

"He will be supervised closely by the people in the agencies," he said.
