Groups Oppose AG's Demand for UVA Records

Four groups have filed a friend-of-the-court brief opposing Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's demand for records related to a former University of Virginia professor's climate change research.

The brief was filed Tuesday in Albemarle County Circuit Court by the ACLU of Virginia, the American Association of University of Professors, the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression.

They are backing the university's lawsuit challenging Cuccinelli's demand for the records of global warming expert Michael Mann. Cuccinelli says he is investigating whether Mann defrauded taxpayers by using manipulated data to obtain government grants. U.Va. and its supporters say Cuccinelli's demand could discourage scientific research.

A hearing in the case is set for Friday.
