Mayor Keeps Quiet on Which Public School Sons Attend

Fenty escorts at least 1 son to public school

Mayor Adrian Fenty appears to be making good on his promise to enroll his twin sons in the D.C. public school system he's seeking to reform.

At an event marking the first day of school Monday, Fenty refused to say which public school his sons will attend. Several parents at Lafayette Elementary, though, later told The Washington Post that Fenty and his wife Michelle had escorted at least one of the boys to the school as classes got under way.

"This morning, Mayor Fenty and his wife, Michelle, officially enrolled their boys in DC Public Schools," spokesperson Mafara Hobson said in a statement released Monday evening in response to a Washington City Paper request for details how the Fenty twins wound up enrolled at Lafayette. "Out of respect for the boys' privacy, he has declined to comment further."

Lafayette is in Washington's affluent Chevy Chase neighborhood. The 9-year-old boys, Andrew and Matthew, previously attended a
private Montessori school.

The family lives within the boundaries for lower performing West Elementary, but it's not unusual for D.C. students to apply to schools outside their neighborhoods.

Fenty's silence about where his boys are going to school already is raising questions about whether or not the Fentys went through the proper channels if they did in fact enroll their children in a school outside their neighborhood.
