Delegate Math: Here's How a Contested Convention Could Happen

The delegate math is becoming increasingly clear: The March 15 Florida and Ohio contests will determine if Donald Trump is the sure-to-be Republican nominee or if there's a contested GOP convention, NBC News reports.

And there doesn't appear to be any other possibility, given that the nominee needs to win 1,237 delegates to win a majority.

Right now, Trump holds an 88-delegate lead over his closest competitor, Ted Cruz, according to NBC News' delegate count, and a 93-delegate lead in the AP count.

Assuming he continues amassing delegates at the same pace in the run up to March 15, he'll be in the clear if he takes Florida and Ohio. But if Sen. Marco Rubio and Gov. John Kasich can hold on in their home states, the math shows it's a whole different ballgame.
