Biden Recalls Pain After Deaths of Wife, Daughter

Vice president gets emotional addressing families of fallen soldiers

Addressing families of fallen soldiers in Arlington, Vice President Joe Biden became visibly pained recalling the wrenching sorrow of losing his first wife and his daughter to a car accident in 1972.

Biden told his audience that the grief was such that he understood why some people contemplate suicide. But in time, the ache becomes more controllable, he said. He credits his turnabout to meeting and later marrying his wife, Jill.

Biden spoke Friday at the 18th annual TAPS National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp.

He told families at the event that a day will come when the thought of a son or daughter, or husband or wife, in his words, “brings a smile to your lips before it brings a tear to your eye.”
