2011 Elections

Election results for Virginia, Maryland

Virginia is looked at as a bellwether state for national political trends, so there will be plenty of national attention on it.

The big story will be whether Republicans can take control of both chambers.  If that happens, it would be just the second time since the Civil War that all three statewide offices and the Virginia House and Senate are in Republican hands.

The Democrats currently have a four-seat (22-18) majority in the Senate. If the GOP picks up even two seats, they will have effective control because Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling -- a Republican -- holds the tie-breaker.

There are some new seats in northern Virginia because of redistricting, so those will be worth keeping an eye on.

There are also a number of local races in Virginia of note. The Boards of Supervisors of most counties are up for election.

In Maryland, six towns elect town council members and a few mayors. They are: Bowie, Greenbelt, College Park, Takoma Park, Gaithersburg, and Rockville.
