5 Injured After Truck Slams Into Chicago Starbucks

Authorities said one person was hospitalized in critical condition

Five people were injured after a truck slammed into a Starbucks in suburban McHenry on Thursday evening, according to police.

At around 4:45 p.m., the truck was heading westbound on West Elm Street, according to police, when it slammed into a vehicle in the drive-thru of the coffee shop before hitting the northeast corner of the building.

Five people suffered injuries as a result of the crash, officials said. One of the victims was taken to Advocate Condell Hospital in critical condition, according to police.

First responders are stunned at the devastation after a truck slammed into a suburban Starbucks, injuring five people. NBC 5's Chris Coffey has the story.

A total of three other patients were listed in fair condition at Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry, police said in a statement, adding that a fifth victim was treated and released at the scene.

Authorities said one of the five victims was pinned under the truck after it crashed into the building and had to extracted by paramedics.

Further information on the incident, including injuries to the victims and the cause of the crash, was not immediately available.

"I was on scene within a few minutes and witnessed several men and women step into action in this bitter cold to save lives," McHenry Mayor Wayne Jett said in a Facebook post. "Prayers to all of the Starbucks employees and customers who were involved. Huge thanks to all the agencies for your support in this situation."

The McHenry Police Department Major Crash Assistance Team continue to investigate the crash. It was unclear whether any citations will be issued.
