A heavy security presence and the memory of a bloody military crackdown 25 years ago on June 4 did little to deter the thousands of tourists rushed into Tiananmen Square in Beijing on Wednesday. Police-manned checkpoints and armed paramilitary patrol on foot and in jeeps canvassed the 3-mile radius around Tiananment Square all week. Plain clothes police and other security forces formed a cordon on the side streets of the square. Meanwhile, tourists flocked to the square and waited in long lines to see one of China's most iconic sites.
