Lauren Conrad's New Fashion Show Reportedly “Too High-Brow” for MTV

Poised for her third go-around with MTV reality show stardom, Lauren Conrad's newest show -- a documentary-style series based on the development of her fashion line, Paper Crown -- has apparently been dropped by the network.

As MTV EVP of programming David Janollari told Entertainment Weekly:

We decided not to go ahead with the show. There were talks about whether we could somehow manage to put together a special based on that footage, but that's also a big question mark based on her interest in that and the finances ... it was a great attempt but it just didn't feel like a perfect fit for us now.

Conrad countered with her own statement:

We sold a show to MTV, filmed it and are really proud of the final result. MTV felt the subject matter was too high brow for their audience and offered me the opportunity to change the show by incorporating more of my personal life. We agreed going into the project that this show would be an aspirational one, focusing on my career and my goals and not my personal relationships. We delivered the show that we sold and are sorry MTV didn’t feel their viewers were savvy enough to appreciate it.

Ba-zing! It's apparent that Conrad has grown out of the MTV machine, but it's also clear that MTV has no interest in altering its winning approach to reality TV -- namely, concentrating more on the characters' personal lives than their actual careers. Conrad's attempt to position her brand is clear, but without the promotion of that pilot, it's unclear how the new Paper Heart line will fare, especially as her contemporaries like Olivia Palermo plan to launch fashion lines on TV of their own.
