Texas Substitute Teacher Fired Over Abortion Joke

The district said student put a balloon under her shirt and said she was pregnant. The teacher held up scissors and he said "it was time for an abortion."

A substitute teacher in Central Texas has been fired over what school officials say was an inappropriate joke about abortion and scissors.

The Hays Consolidated Independent School District said the male teacher was dismissed following last Friday's incident at Lehman High School in Kyle, 15 miles south of Austin.

A district statement Tuesday said a student had put a balloon under her shirt and said she was pregnant. The teacher held up scissors and he said "it was time for an abortion."

The school statement said it's irrelevant whether or not the gesture was intended as a joke and the action showed a lack of judgment by the teacher.

The fired educator, whose name wasn't released, had worked for the district since November.
