Tornadoes Spotted in Md. as Massive Storms Barrel East

A spate of tornadoes touched down in Maryland Thursday afternoon and evening, NBC Washington reported, as a massive storm system barrelled east, leaving millions of Americans in the path of severe weather after pummeling the Midwest a day earlier. The National Weather Service said trained spotters had confirmed tornadoes on the ground in a handful of cities between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. Major airports in the Northeast faced delays, and flood warnings were in effect in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Further west, at least 55,000 people were still without power in Illinois and northwest Indiana after the same storm system barreled through the Midwest on Wednesday — although the storm did not produce the unusual windstorms known as derechos, as had earlier been feared.
