An 18-year-old Georgia man will spend the rest of his life in prison for allegedly fatally shooting a baby in a stroller during an attempted robbery, a judge ruled Thursday. De'Marquise Elkins, 18, was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Because he was 17 at the time of the shooting, he was ineligible to face the death penalty. A jury found Elkins guilty last month of murder in the March 21 shooting of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago in Brunswick, Ga. The child's mother, Sherry West, said at trial that she was walking home from the post office one morning when Elkins showed a gun, demanded her purse, fired a warning shot and then, when she said she had no money, shot Elkins in the leg and her child between the eyes. Elkins' alleged accomplice, Dominique Lang, 15, who is charged as an adult with murder, has yet to be tried. Elkins' mother and sister were charged with tampering with evidence in the case; his mother was convicted.
