Paralyzed Bully Victim Receives $4.2M in Settlement

A New Jersey school district has agreed to a $4.2-million settlement six years after a brutal bullying attack left a student paralyzed, MSNBC reported. Sawyer Rosenstein, now a college freshman, became paralyzed from the waist down after being punched by a schoolmate when he was 12 years old. In 2009, The Rosensteins filed a lawsuit against the school board and various administrators for failing to notice the attacker’s violent tendencies and settled with the bully two years ago. The Ramsey Board of Education finally agreed to the settlement after three years of depositions and pre-trial discovery, but denied allegations that it had “failed or compromised its responsibility to develop and to implement effective policies and procedures to protect the safety and rights” of the school community, according to its statement. Rosenstein is currently majoring in communication at Syracuse University.
