The Indian woman who was gang-raped and beaten in New Delhi earlier this month has died at the hospital where she was receiving treatment, The Associated Press reported. A statement by Singapore's Mount Elizabeth hospital said she "died peacefully" early Saturday. The 23-year-old medical student was severely beaten, raped for almost an hour and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi. The city has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities. Most of the sexual assaults go unreported and unremarked. Last week's attack triggered the biggest protests in the capital since mid-2011 demonstrations against government corruption. "We share the anguish and anger with the country over this heinous crime," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told reporters on Friday. "Our prayers are with the brave young girl and best possible medical care is being provided to her."
