Package Sent to Sheriff Arpaio Could Have Injured, Killed

A package that was intercepted by police late Thursday after it was sent to the Arizona sheriff dubbed "America's toughest" could have exploded if opened, causing serious injury or death, authorities said on Friday. A suspicious package addressed to Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's downtown Phoenix headquarters was X-rayed by officers in Flagstaff, Ariz., after which a bomb team destroyed it, NBC News reported. "If the device had been detonated, it could have caused very serious injuries and possibly deaths," Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Jerry Sheridan told Reuters. "There was that much explosives found in the package." Investigators said a suspect has been identified in the case but declined to release more information. The FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Flagstaff police are investigating. Arpaio, who was re-elected for his sixth term in November, has earned national headlines for his tent city jail and immigrant roundups.
