Police said a lone gunman is believed to have carried out a shooting rampage near a shopping center in Munich, Germany, NBC News reported.
The gunman, who killed at least nine people before killing himself, was an 18-year-old German-Iranian from Munich who lived in the city for more than two years, according to police. A motive was not known.
Twenty-one people were hospitalized, three of whom were critically wounded, according to police.
Officials did not identify him, but said he was found dead at 8:30 p.m., and may have killed himself. German police initially said there may have been as many as three gunmen.
The shooting attack at a McDonald’s attached to the Olympia Einkaufszentrum mall forced a lockdown of the city, the shutdown of public transportation and calls to residents to avoid public places.
The shooting prompted authorities to operate “on the premise of a terror attack,” but officials later said there were no links to terror established.
