Military OKs Hormone Therapy for Chelsea Manning

The U.S. Army has approved hormone therapy for Chelsea Manning, who is doing time in a military prison for leaking national security secrets to WikiLeaks, defense officials told NBC News late Thursday. After being convicted in July 2013, Private Manning said she was a transgender woman. Since she has been clinically diagnosed and is confined to the military prison, the Army is obligated to provide and pay for her hormone treatment. Manning, who was sentenced to 35 years in prison, became the first military inmate to request treatment for gender dysphoria. She asked for a treatment plan that would consider three measures: dressing and living as a woman, hormone therapy and possible surgery.
