Boehner Invites Pope Francis to Address Congress

House Speaker John Boehner Thursday invited Pope Francis to speak to Congress if he were to ever travel to the United States. The pope may be planning a trip to the U.S. in 2015, according to The National Catholic Reporter, but the trip is not confirmed. Boehner, who is a practicing Catholic, sent the invitation on the first anniversary of Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio becoming the pope. No pope has ever addressed a joint meeting of Congress. The last pope to make a visit to the U.S., Benedict XVI, visited George W. Bush at the White House and performed Mass at Nationals Park.
