Director David Fincher is looking add two veterans to his cast for "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," and his search for an actress to take the title role appears to be down to two stars on the rise.
Stellan Skarsgard is in negotiating to take the role of Martin Vanger, one of the prime suspects in the mystery at the center of "Dragon Tattoo," reported Variety. Meanwhile, Robin Wright is eying the role of Erika Berger, reported Deadline. Berger is the publisher and sometime girlfriend of investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist, who is being played by Daniel Craig.
Both actors are said to be working on deals that would lock them up for the second and third films in the trilogy, which we've sort of begun to take on faith with all the players surrounding this project.
U.S. & World
The day's top national and international news.
But the big question that's still looming over the film -- and frankly all of Hollywood -- is who will win the role of the Lisbeth Salander, the most sought after part in recent memory.
An exhaustive search that his included at least a dozen actresses and one South African rap star appears to have been winnowed down to Emily Browning and Rooney Mara, according to a tweet from Production Weekly.
Fincher has been said to be looking for a relative unknown for the role, and each of these actresses aren't going to qualify for much longer. Browning is starring in Zack Snyder's upcoming "Sucker Punch," out March 25, which has been described as "'Alice in Wonderland' with machine guns." The trailer that dropped last month was just bananas -- we can't wait to see the rest of it.
Mara can next be seen in Fincher's Facebook movie, "The Social Network," out Oct. 1, a film that has already won co-star Andrew Garfield the role of Spider-Man. For you football fans who think she's got a weird name, she is in fact the product of a marriage of the two great NFL dynasties, the Rooneys, owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Maras of the New York Giants.
Fincher gonna have to make a choice soon if he wants to hit his Dec. 21, 2011, release date.
