Dallas police spent several hours at Dallas Matu Christian Church, located on the 1100 block of Shiloh Road, questioning church members and analyzing a Honda Pilot in the parking lot.
Services were taking place at the church when the boy's father rushed outside.
"I think he wanted to call police but he doesn't speak English," said Reng Om.
The church is dominated with families from Burma, Om said. Despite a language barrier, church members were able to call 911.
"They are a perfect family. I'm very upset for him," Om said.
The child was taken to Baylor Medical Center White rock and later pronounced dead, Dallas Fire-Rescue said.
Originally, police said the boy was 3, but he was actually 2 years old.
