Trump Dismisses Questions Around Donation to Florida Attorney General

The Donald J. Trump Foundation paid an IRS fine for not disclosing a $25,000 donation

Donald Trump said Monday that the $25,000 donation from the Donald J. Trump Foundation to Florida’s attorney general had nothing to do with the fact that her office was considering an investigation into Trump University.

The Republican candidate’s press secretary confirmed to NBC News that Trump paid a $2,500 IRS fine over the donation, which was made to a campaign group linked to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi. The fine was levied in response to the complaints of a Washington, D.C.-based ethics group that the $25,000 campaign donation had not been disclosed to tax officials.

"The rules are clear: a tax-exempt charitable foundation cannot support a political group," the group’s executive director Noah Bookbinder said in a news release at the time of the complaint.

Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks confirmed to NBC News that Trump had paid the fine but dismissed the incident as “minor.”
